Intel Centrino, officially
Intel has received an official press release today announcing the beginning of the era of a new mobile platform – Intel Centrino. We can say that over the past few months, this is perhaps the most mentioned technology in the news. Our readers are already familiar with many details of Intel Centrino in sufficient detail, I think that more detailed technical details will follow in the near future. Now – briefly about the essence of the announcement.
Intel Centrino technology includes the Intel Pentium M processor, Intel 855 chipset family and Intel Pro / Wireless 2100 network interface. All technology components are optimized, validated and tested to work together on mobile systems. Key features of the new architecture: micro-op layering to speed up execution and reduce power consumption (Micro-Ops Fusion), advanced branch prediction technology to reduce overall system latency to improve overall performance while reducing power consumption (Advanced Branch Prediction), and a dedicated stack manager reducing the total number of micro-ops and thus increasing performance with less power consumption (Dedicated Stack Manager). In addition to wireless connectivity, Intel Centrino Technology includes features designed to maximize battery life, reduce the thickness and weight of notebooks, and achieve high levels of mobile productivity.
Pentium M processors are manufactured using 0.13 micron technology and contain 77 million. transistors. The processors are equipped with 400 MHz system bus, economical L2 cache with a capacity of 1 MB with the function of disabling unused blocks, as well as special features to reduce the overall power consumption of the platform. Processor Supports Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology with Multiple Choice of Operating Frequencies and Voltages, and SSE2 Streaming SIMD Extensions.
The Intel 855 Chipset Family includes two new chipsets designed specifically for the mobile market: Intel 855PM for external graphics and Intel 855GM with integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2. Chipsets support Intel SpeedStep technology, Deeper Sleep mode and have a built-in timer that automatically turns off the clock generator when not in use. The 855GM chipset also features a low power graphics mode. Both chipsets support IO Hub architecture, up to 2GB DDR266 memory.
Intel PRO / Wireless 2100 network interface is designed and tested for full 802 access point compatibility.11b Wi-Fi Certified. It features built-in security for wireless LANs, including 802.1x WEP and VPN, software upgradeable to WPA. In addition, through a partnership with Cisco Systems, Intel Centrino mobile technology will support Cisco LEAP technology with software upgradeability to support Cisco * Compatible Extensions.
Leading manufacturers around the world start shipping notebooks to Centrino today. The average price of such systems will be about $ 1399.
Intel Centrino Mobile Technology components (Intel 855PM Chipset, Intel PRO / Wireless 2100 Network Interface and Intel Pentium M Processor 1.60, 1.50, 1.40, 1.30 GHz) are $ 720 , $ 506, $ 377 and $ 292, respectively, for deliveries in lots of 1000 pieces. Also available are kits for Intel Centrino Technology for mobile with Intel Pentium M processor with reduced power @ 1.10 GHz and ultra-low power @ 900 MHz. These kits are priced at $ 345 and $ 324, respectively. Intel also sells each of these devices separately.
