IBM and MontaVista Announce Dynamic Power Management Technology

What new microprocessor companies can’t come up with to make them attractive to consumer electronics! For example, IBM and MontaVista Software announced that the use of MontaVista Linux Consumer Electronics Edition (CEE) on the embedded IBM PowerPC 405LP processor leads to a reduction in power consumption by no less than 50%.

Currently, IBM is shipping only trial copies of the PowerPC 405LP for test purposes, mass production should begin sometime in the third quarter of 2021, but MontaVista Linux CEE should appear in the first half of this year.

The announcement of the IBM PowerPC 405LP + MontaVista Linux CEE bundle is the fruit of a joint effort between companies to develop and implement Dynamic Power Management energy-saving technologies designed for portable PCs, handheld computers and pocket PCs (PDA). The approach used in Dynamic Power Management is quite curious: the supply voltage and clock frequency of the processor change during the execution of even such resource-intensive applications as playing multimedia files. For example, when playing MPEG4, the supply voltage decreases between frames and increases again only to process the next frame. However, since the exact power consumption data for the PowerPC 405LP 32-bit RISC processor is not known, it is difficult to say how big the gain from the claimed 50% is.
