1U dual-socket servers from Newisys on AMD Opteron processors
It is reported that a new and so far little-known server solutions company, Newisys, consisting mainly of former IBM employees, is planning to release two-processor 1U servers based on AMD Opteron processors.
The document, located on the Newisys website, states that the company intends to produce 1U dual-processor high-end solutions equipped with Ultra 320 SCSI hard drives (1 – 2 hot-swap 36 GB – 146 GB U320 SCSI or 1 – 2 IDE HDD), dual-port Gigabit Ethernet adapters, two PCI-X slots (one full-size 133 MHz slot and one low-profile 66 MHz slot). The server will support up to 16 GB of memory (512 MB – 16 GB ECC, Registered DDR333 SDRAM, up to eight 2 GB modules). What is interesting6 32- and 64-bit versions of Linux and Microsoft Windows are indicated as the operating system.
It remains unclear whether these will be systems based on ClawHammer chips with a single-channel DDR SDRAM or SledgeHammer processors with a dual-channel memory interface. Obviously, the announcement of new servers from Newisys will take place no earlier than the release of Opteron processors, that is, no earlier than 2021.
