GDDR-2, GDDR-3, GDDR-4… who is bigger?
The turmoil of recent weeks caused by the announcement of new types of graphics memory has cleared up a bit with the start of the Jedex conference in Beijing. If you remember, back in September we talked about the fact that a special JEDEC subcommittee was busy developing specifications for the DDR-II graphics substandard. Then the first data began to appear in print about the features of this type of memory, the implementation of interface buses, etc.P. Quite unexpectedly, ATI announces GDDR-3 memory in early October. All of us then politely kept silent, waiting for further explanations, however, they came only during the days of the Beijing JEDEX Beijing Conference.
So, what is the beauty of GDDR-3? The specifications of this standard define key changes in the frequency driver and I / O interface circuitry, better suited to point-to-point graphics controller architectures; it is the method of receiving / transmitting data that distinguishes it from standard DRAM. The first GDDR-3 chips are expected on the market in May – June next year, with clock speeds from 500 MHz and performance up to 1 Gbps per pin. Subsequent versions will have a performance of 1.4 – 1.6 Gbps.
All this, of course, is wonderful. The only trouble is that the version of the graphics memory standard, which ATI calls GDDR-3, is called by NVIDIA, Samsung and others just GDDR-2. Prototypes of these chips have already been demonstrated at a conference in Beijing. According to a Micron Technology spokesman, the difference between ATI’s GDDR3 specifications and NVIDIA’s specifications is that NVIDIA’s specifications have a linear bandwidth of 1 Gbps, while ATI’s specifications operate at 1.4 Gbps. This very 40% increase in the performance of the chips made ATI want to assign the number 3 to its standard.
Some conference attendees criticize ATI for the name of the GDDR-3 chips, since they still fall under the DDR-II specifications and have nothing to do with DDR-III, the specifications of which have not yet been defined even in general terms. As Desi Rhoden, chairman of JEDEC, put it aptly and ironically: I’m sure the next company to offer [a new graphics memory standard] will call it GDDR-4, 5 or 6. 🙂
By the way, at this JEDEC session the date of the final version of the specification of the new standard for DDR-2 graphics memory was finally announced. The specifications will be announced in December and that’s when the committee will come to a consensus on the final name of the standard.
