NEC transfers PDA production to a subsidiary

According to Nihon Keizai Shimbun Morning Release, NEC has decided to transfer its Pocket PC business to its subsidiary NEC Infrontia Corp at the end of October..

NEC Infrontia will now handle all production and R&D issues regarding NEC’s PocketGear PDA family, including outsourcing contacts in Taiwan.

As you know, NEC made its debut in the PDA market in March 2021. In the current fiscal year, the company expects sales of pocket PCs in the order of ¥1 billion., however, the decision to transfer the business into the hands of a subsidiary is due to unsatisfactory domestic sales. Plus, by transferring all PDA operations from NEC’s balance sheet to NEC’s balance sheet, Infrontia will allow the parent company to reduce the cost of its R&D work. However, marketing operations with PDA will be carried out by both companies, under a single NEC brand.

According to the research company Yano Research Institute Ltd., Japanese PDA market has grown by only 2.3% this year on total sales in 2021 of 1.37 million. Sales growth is expected to be even more modest in 2021.
